Carrie (Sissy Spacek) invokes her telekinetic powers at a school prom in a scene from Carrie (1976)

Having heard about the arrival of Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “Carrie” over on Prime Video, I decided to dig out my vintage set of lobby cards for the 1976 movie version.

Arriving in cinemas a mere two years after Carrie (the novel) was published in 1974, Brian De Palma’s expertly directed horror film proved to be a critical and commercial success right from the get-go.

Indeed, the film version even met with the approval of the book’s author Stephen King – who went one further by going on record that he considered the shocking finale of De Palma’s movie to surpass the original version in the book. High praise indeed (fans of his work will note that some years later he was far from entirely happy with how Stanley Kubrick chose to adapt another of his most famous novels: “The Shining“).

Starring Sissy Spacek and “introducing” John Travolta, Carrie (1976) remained largely faithful to the King’s original story and still stands up well today (with at least one entirely unnecessary remake and sequel having since come and gone over the years since).

From what I can gather however, the early response to Flanagan’s new TV streaming version is entirely positive – so I for one certainly plan on checking it out.

In the meantime, you can enjoy the British “front of house” cards in my collection (below) and also one of the lead pieces of art promoting Amazon’s series.
