Did You Know…? Several decades on, some movie fans are still surprised to discover that The Silence of the Lambs… was actually the *second* movie featuring the iconic character Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The first was actually Michael Mann’s superb crime thriller “Manhunter” (1986), which was based on Thomas Harris’ preceding novel “Red Dragon” (1981). Mann opted to rename Hannibal as “Lecktor” in Manhunter and the different film title was chosen after concerns raised by the producer Dino De Laurentiis (he feared that cinemagoers might get “Red Dragon” confused with another film “Year of the Dragon” – which has been released to critical and commercial failure just one year prior, in 1985…). “Manhunter” was chosen instead and the rest, as they say, is history…
